Greg Biffle Obituary – Death: NASCAR Legend Greg Biffle and Six Others Die in Fatal Plane Crash

Greg Biffle Obituary – Death: Charlotte, North Carolina — Tributes continue to pour in for NASCAR Hall of Famer Greg Biffle, 55, after a private jet crash in North Carolina last month claimed his life along with six others, including his wife Cristina and their two children.

A preliminary report released by the National Transportation Safety Board confirms Biffle was not piloting the aircraft at the time of the fatal accident. Federal investigators say an experienced retired airline pilot was at the controls, and no one aboard was properly certified to act as copilot for the aircraft. Evidence suggests instrument malfunctions played a role as the plane attempted to return to Statesville Regional Airport before crashing about a third of a mile from the runway, igniting a large fire. All seven on board were killed instantly.

Biffle, one of NASCAR’s most accomplished drivers with more than 50 victories across the sport’s three top series including championships in the Trucks and Xfinity Series, was widely respected both on and off the track. After retiring from full-time competition, he continued to be involved in racing and community efforts, including humanitarian work following natural disasters.

The tragedy struck on December 18 when the Cessna C550, owned by Biffle, departed Statesville Regional Airport only to experience issues minutes later. Investigators noted problems with gauges and instrumentation before the jet attempted an emergency return, ultimately crashing short of the runway. The NTSB emphasized that while the airline-rated pilot was operating the aircraft, the lack of a qualified second pilot may have been a factor in the accident’s outcome.

Among the other victims were Craig Wadsworth and retired airline pilot Dennis Dutton and his son Jack, who lacked the proper endorsement to serve in the copilot seat.

A public memorial service held in Charlotte drew hundreds of mourners from the racing community and beyond, underscoring Biffle’s impact on fans, peers and colleagues alike. Remembered as a fierce competitor and generous human being, Biffle’s legacy in motorsports is being honored at tracks and events nationwide.

Investigators continue to analyze flight data and cockpit recordings to better understand the sequence of events that led to the crash. In the meantime, friends and family reflect on the sudden loss of a beloved figure whose presence extended far beyond the racetrack.
